AIPP Victorian Epson Professional Photography Awards

This week I participated for the first time in the annual AIPP Australian Institute of Professional Photography Victorian State Awards (VPPY) which were held here in Melbourne at the 1140 Studios in Malvern.

The VPPY awards are organised by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography - Australia's leading membership body of professional photographers. Each state in Australia has their own awards competition, which is then followed by a nation-wide competition, the Canon APPA awards.

Professional photographers can submit their work in various categories: portraits, wedding, family, landscape, illustrative, travel, documentary/editorial, science/nature & environment, creative and album. For the majority of categories (documentary/editorial and commercial excluded), the photographer has to provide also a print for judging, so not only the photograph but also the print preparation and quality is assessed under controlled lighting conditions - which is quite another challenge in itself!!

Each photograph is juried by an expert panel of five judges, who assess the image with regard to its content, originality as well as technical craftsmanship.  The score is given out of 100 points and the panel's average is the final score:

95-100 Gold with Distinction
90-94   Gold
85-89   Silver with Distinction
80-84   Silver
78-79   Professional Practice but not quite award standard
70-77   Professional Practice
50-69   Below Professional Practice

The stats from this year's VPPY are:    911 images were entered by 213 photographers and 349 Silvers (38.3%), 68 Silver Distinctions Awarded (7.5%), 25 Golds Awarded 2.7% and  3 Gold Distinctions (0.3%) were awarded across the 2 days.

The judging is recorded and you can assess/review it in a livestream, see below if you want to see some of the judging, it is very educational.

I feel very honoured to be awarded 5 Silver Awards in total, 2 in the documentary and 3 in the (very tough) landscape category.  It was quite nerve wrecking, but I have learned a lot and look forward to enter the next competition.

The Prague metro carries around 600 million passengers a year and about 40% of people choose it as their mode of public transport in Prague. It was first opened in 1974 and is mostly Russian build. Its three lines consist of about 60 km of tracks running mostly underground, and 57 stations. New stations continue to be added.
